Remanents of the Backriver Lighthouse located on the northern part of Grandview Beach in Hampton, Virginia. Built in 1829, it was accessible by a 144' long footbridge across the then marshlands from the keeper's house. Remanents of the footbridge and house pileons are shown in the forepart of the picture. It was decommissioned in 1936 and twenty years later, encroaching seawater and Hurricane Flossy took their toll laying the detoriating lighthouse into the Chesapeake Bay.
Once a thriving and popular amusement park that was built in 1897, all that remains today of Buckroe Beach Amusement Park is the miniature replica of the Backriver Lighthouse and the original walkways. A city park now replaces the beloved amusement park after it was tore down in 1987.
